Indo-French military exercise ‘Shakti-2016’ begins

Indo-French joint military training exercise named ‘Exercise Shakti-2016’ will be held in Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan’s Bikaner.

It will be focused on counter terrorism operations in backdrop of semi-urban terrain under United Nations Mandate.

This is the third edition in the series of bilateral exercises under this banner.

 A comprehensive training programme for a period of two weeks has been worked out for achieving the same.
During the exercise, participants will engage in variety of missions from joint planning, cordon and search operations, search and rescue, joint tactical drills and basics of special arms skills.

The exercise would be conducted in two phases, namely combat conducting and tactical training and validation exercise.

A look into the INDO-FRENCH defence relations:

Defense partnership and cooperation is built on historic French and Indian military interactions which stretch back to the Carnatic Wars.

India was heavily involved in both World War I and World War II and suffered huge loss of lives on battlefields in France.

Indo-French Air Force Exercise Garuda IV was held at Istres air base in France on  June 2010.

Indo-French Joint Naval Exercise Varuna was held in the Mediterranean sea off the port of Toulon  on July 2012.

The first Indo-France joint army exercise named Shakti was conducted in India at Chaubattia on 2011

A landmark Framework Agreement on Civil Nuclear Cooperation was signed between India and France on September 2008 during the visit of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to France.

India Tech Vision-2035 India's technology thinktank under the ministry of science & technology has come out with `Technology Vision 2035' here at the ongoing Indian Science Congress, identifying the challenges ahead and how they can be dealt with through technological interventions while realising the dream of a developed India by the year 2035.
