ISRO to launch the fifth navigational satellite IRNSS-1E

ISRO to launch the fifth navigational satellite IRNSS-1E on January 20.

The satellite will be propelled into space by ISRO’s workhorse launch vehicle PSLV-C31.

What is Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System?

  • It is an indigenously developed Navigation Satellite System that is used to provide accurate real-time positioning and timing services over India and region extending to 1500 km around India.

  • The fully deployed IRNSS system consists of 3 satellites in GEO orbit(geostationary orbit)and 4 satellites in GSO(geosynchronous orbit) orbit, approximately 36,000 km altitude above earth surface.

Why Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System?

  • The requirement of such a navigation system is driven because access to foreign government-controlled global navigation satellite systems is not guaranteed in hostile situations, as happened to the Indian military depending on American GPS during the Kargil War.

  •  The IRNSS would provide two services:

1.The Standard Positioning Service open for civilian use.

2.The Restricted Service (an encrypted one) for authorised users (including the military).

  • IRNSS would have seven satellites, out of which four are already placed in orbit.

The thinktank -Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) -in the vision document lists a technology roadmap for India, giving details of 12 sectors and technologies that in some cases exist but need to be deployed, some in the pilot stage that must be scaled up and technologies in R&D stage. It, in fact, talks about many future technologies, ranging from flying cars, real time translation software, personalised medicine, wearable devices, e-sensing (e-nose and e-tongue) to 100% recyclable materials among others which may be used in different areas to solve day-to-day problems “The trajectories del...
